Suicide Prevention: Stats & Facts

Students today hear all kinds of statistics and facts about the rising rates of suicide and mental health struggles.

The statistic I hope you’ll remember: For every one person who dies by suicide, there are 278 people who found ways to move past thoughts of killing themselves. That means there’s hope, there’s help, and there’s healing.

And here’s the fact I hope you’ll remember. Suicide survives in secrecy.

Talk with someone. Studies show that when people tell someone they’re having suicidal thoughts, then they’re 66% less likely to attempt suicide. And if they tell their parents, they are 98% less likely to attempt suicide.

The truth is, friends can help friends prevent suicide as an option.

So please, treat every one as if they’re going through a crazy hard time in their lives, because you’ll probably be right about half the time.

So speak up and reach out, because there is hope and help ahead.
